Airport Infrastructure and Runway

that is a single integrated building covering 190,000 square feet of floor area. This terminal includes 2 aerobridges which allow passengers to board aircraft directly from the building without going outside.

The terminal can handle approximately 200 passengers per hour. There are 20 check-in counters to manage passenger flow during peak hours. The runway is numbered 09/27 and measures 2,835 metres in length with a concrete and asphalt surface.

This runway length supports medium-sized aircraft such as Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 safely. Expansion plans include extending the runway to 3,660 metres and building a parallel taxiway.

The Maharashtra government approved land acquisition for about 139 acres with notifications issued in early 2025. These upgrades will help handle larger aircraft and increase the number of flights in the coming years.

Airlines Operating and Flight Routes

History, Name Proposals and Current Status

The airport grew because the Government of Maharashtra started efforts to increase tourism in the early 1990s. In March 2020, the state government proposed renaming it Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Airport after the Maratha ruler Sambhaji. In December 2025, the Government of India and Ministry of Civil Aviation permitted the name Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Airport

However, because this differed from the original state proposal, the Airports Authority of India put the renaming on hold. The airport is still commonly called Aurangabad Airport with IATA code IXU and ICAO code VAAU.

Past Incidents Recorded

The airport has two recorded serious incidents in its history. On 22 September 1988, a Vayudoot Dornier 228 aircraft registered VT-EJT crashed during landing in bad weather at the undershoot of Runway 27.

No passengers or crew died, but the aircraft was substantially damaged and written off. On 26 April 1993, Indian Airlines Flight 491, a Boeing 737-2A8 registered VT-ECQ, crashed after takeoff in hot and humid conditions.

The plane struck a lorry on the highway at the end of Runway 09, then hit high-tension power lines about 3 kilometres northeast and went down. Out of 112 passengers and 6 crew members, 55 people died while 63 survived, including the pilot, co-pilot and two other crew members.
